O’Reilly’s 2019 artificial intelligence survey suggests that artificial intelligence and machine learning skill shortage is holding back companies on the road towards digital transformation.

In concrete numbers, 23% of respondents believe that a lack of skilled individuals is slowing the adoption of AI. In the 2018 version of the same survey, 20% of respondents shared the opinion, which is a 3% yearly increase.

Apart from this, the survey revealed other important nuggets of wisdom, including the following:

  • More than half of respondents (60%, in fact) reported their companies are making plans to spend at least 5% of the IT budget they have available on artificial intelligence, so there’s a future in this innovative technology.
  • 19% of respondents shared the fact that they work for companies that are planning to spend at least 20% of their overall budget on AI, thus reinforcing the point made above.
  • 81% of respondents claim that the companies employing them are already using AI technology.
  • According to 23% of respondents, company culture is to blame for holding back the adoption of AI technology.
  • In terms of where the respondents are using the said technology, a third of respondents claim it’s for IT or customer service, while half of respondents say they are using it for development and research.
  • As for deep learning, 86% of respondents are using it for unstructured data and 69% of them for plain text. 53% of them report that the technology is used for computer vision.
