IoT devices often become the target of hackers due to how vulnerable they are in terms of cybersecurity. A compromised IoT device can potentially be used for all sorts of nefarious purposes, whether it be directly impacting the local network, or simply becoming a part of a botnet.

Today, we’re going to cover three important cybersecurity principles you need to implement right away if you haven’t already:

  1. Always remain vigilant

Always assume the environment your IoT device is employed in is unsafe. After all, networks can always become compromised, and you never know what’s going on with certainty.

  1. Update regularly

Regular updates will make it harder for the bad guys to succeed. However, certain connected devices may not be supported any longer, or simply haven’t been designed to receive updates in the first place, which introduces a cybersecurity risk. To combat this, it’s best to isolate them from the network if possible.

This way, you won’t be an easy target for hackers. If you can streamline and plan the updating process in advance, even better.

  1. Sandbox everything

If you’re running your apps in a self-contained sandbox, even if something happens and the app gets compromised, the damage will be limited to the scope of the sandbox, meaning it won’t affect the environment.

Closing thoughts

Keep in mind that bulletproof cybersecurity does not exist. All we can do is minimise our chances of being victimised and make the bad guys’ jobs as hard as possible. Oftentimes, as you’ll find, this is more than enough.
