Unveiled by Elon Musk in November 2017, this is Tesla’s entry into the commercial trucking market. The truck’s autonomous driving feature has significant importance in the automotive industry’s digital transformation and is designed to help drivers endure long journeys.

The vehicle is completely electric, and its interior resembles the ones usually seen in sports cars. Tesla Semi, as it is called, is said to allow for $200,000 in fuel cost savings over a 2-year period. According to Tesla, the truck is capable of utilising only 2 of its 4 independent motors, so they promise it won’t break down even over millions of miles.

Before having to recharge it at the nearest charging station, the truck will be able to travel between 300 and 500 miles. The company hasn’t revealed the exact charging times yet, but they are hinting that the battery could be recharged back to 80% in as little as 30 minutes.

The key thing to note is this isn’t a fully autonomous vehicle. Instead, the cameras and sensors built into it will help the driver monitor the surroundings, warn about potential collisions, and automatically adjust the vehicle to stay in lane. In the event of an emergency, it will automatically trigger the brakes. The vehicle can even call an ambulance if needed.

Tesla Semi is expected to cost £180,000 for the 500-mile range version. There will be a cheaper alternative with a range of 300 miles without recharging, and it will cost £150,000.
