Scott Petty, Chief Technology Officer at Vodafone UK, shared his words on why he believes that empowering people is the key to digital transformation.
Currently, Vodafone UK is busy paving the way for digital transformation by getting their network ready for 5G, allowing for internet speeds about four times faster than what the 4G network can deliver. This will set the stage for a new era of innovation, enabling the following:
– Driverless cars
– Smart homes
– Remote surgery
With the clever use of automation, they’ve been able to use the time of their engineers in a much more efficient manner, consequently adding more value to customers. One example of this is writing software solutions to check whether the webpages are functional or not instead of having to make these checks manually. These tests can be completed in a couple of seconds.
Thanks to cloud technology, it’s possible to set up an environment that can take a huge spike in traffic at a fraction of the cost and do so much faster than it used to be.
The end goal of what the company is up to, according to Petty, is fostering a culture of innovation. Their employees are encouraged to experiment and try new things. An example of this is what happened during the spring of 2017 when one of the Vodafone engineers managed to develop code that allows Vodafone customers to make an inquiry about their bills.
Vodafone believes in the drive to innovate, which is what will open the doors to digital transformation.
