Ofcom has released figures revealing that more than 24 million residential and business properties now have a broadband connection.

Ofcom’s analysis also reveals that almost one million premises have connected to residential and business broadband within the last year. At the end of the first quarter of 2015 the number of broadband connections in the UK stood at 24,007,000, which is a rise of 4.3% from the figure published at the same time last year.

Over the last quarter the number of residential and business broadband connections has risen by 277,000. One of the reasons for this large increase is the success of the Broadband Delivery UK initiative, which is responsible for the delivery of superfast residential and business broadband across the UK.

It is predicted that demand will increase over the next few years, thanks in part to the continuing roll-out of new broadband services by BT. Add to this the increased coverage from companies such as Virgin Media and it is predicted that an additional four million premises will benefit from faster broadband service by 2020.

The need for superfast broadband for homes and companies is growing because faster connections are required to take advantage of all the internet has to offer, with the traditional copper broadband lines dropping in number. In the first quarter of 2014 there were nearly 16 million traditional connections; however, by the first quarter of this year this figure had dropped to 15.2 million as a result of the migration to fibre lines delivering the superfast services.
