The chief executive of Ofcom has confirmed the organisation’s commitment to ensuring that all businesses and residential properties will be able to get a good 4G mobile signal indoors by the end of 2017.
Sharon White has said that small businesses suffer from poorer provision than larger organisations. Even when a decent broadband connection is provided, the rest of the service is often poor and if they make a complaint there is often a poor response.
Mobile data is becoming essential for companies and Ofcom has set in place rules to ensure that indoor coverage of 4G reaches 98% of the population by the end of 2017. Ms White has said that it is a challenge in areas such as Scotland’s Highlands and Islands region, but it is just as important as reaching much more densely populated areas. The organisation is now launching a consultation process to boost the use of ‘mobile repeaters’.
The Federation of Small Businesses has discovered that many companies struggle with the quality of service for their business broadband. They experience delays in having faults fixed and speeds are often lower than expected. The policy director of the FSB, Mike Cherry, has said that digital technology is being used by a lot of small companies, but the problems mean that they are still not able to maximise its potential. He has welcomed the news that Ofcom is working on increasing the minimum standards and making it easier for companies to find their way around the digital technology market.
