Survey shows companies still unsure about broadband

A survey has revealed that a number of SMEs are still unsure about the provision of their business broadband.

The survey, which was carried out by Virgin Media Business, found that more than one-third of senior management executives are not sure what speed their broadband is and almost three-quarters have no idea what their monthly data usage is.

Virgin said that the lack of understanding of this basic information could see some companies unable to keep up with the advances of digital technology. Around half of small businesses indicated that they have had a problem with slow broadband speeds and believe that the lack of faster business broadband has led to lower employee efficiency.

92% of those who took part in the survey, however, said that they expected their business to become more digital within the next five years. The MD of Virgin Media Business, Peter Kelly, said that it is important for SMEs to be better educated on broadband. High speed broadband can make a huge difference to a company, with more and more business now being carried out online.

Virgin has launched Project Lightning, an investment in broadband infrastructure, for the next five years. It is hoped that this will benefit around four million properties in the UK will achieve 152Mb speeds, which claims will be far faster than those offered by BT and other providers.

This news has been welcomed by the national chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses, John Allan, who said that the faster speeds are not generally available to the companies that need them.
