Grants are now available for companies in Lisburn and Castlereagh to install faster broadband services.

The grants, which are being made available to SMEs in the area, are worth up to £3,000. Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council is currently taking part in the SuperConnected Broadband Voucher Scheme, which was launched at an event at the Inspire Business Centre. The chairman of the council’s development committee, Allan Ewart, said that current services are just not good enough for many companies and that installing better-quality business broadband can be vital.

The vouchers can be used to cover the cost of equipment and installation, and the grant does not have to be repaid. Companies can apply on their own or there is the provisions for them to apply in a group, such as when there are several different businesses in the same building.

The Inspire Business Centre has already benefited from a group application, with the chief executive, Mark Brotherston, saying that the centre will be the first business park in the region to offer this standard of broadband technology. The fibre technology will be installed in each business unit.

The vouchers have been funded by the government and are set to be available until the end of March next year, although the funding could run out before then if there is a lot of interest. Companies are being encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
