Businesses in Middlesbrough are set to reap the benefits of cheaper and faster broadband services through a new initiative.

A new wireless service has been launched, thanks to an investment of £150,000, with the aim being to ensure that local businesses get better access to online services to help them to compete in the modern market. The scheme will cover areas that have not yet been reached by BT’s business broadband installation services.

A number of business districts in the city have signed up, including Southlands Business Centre and Riverside Park. The new service offers speeds of up to 50Mbps and the FSB (Federation of Small Businesses) has stated that companies need the faster speeds to deal with the problems that are holding them back. The organisation wants to see a universal service obligation to ensure a minimum speed of at least 10Mbps.

The new services qualify for the government’s Broadband Connection Vouchers and companies have welcomed the new initiative, saying that it will help them to develop a more accurate business strategy. They believe that it offers a more reliable and secure service that will enable them to be more competitive.

Stephen O’Connell, the director of the new service, said that industrial areas and cities such as Middlesbrough can generally only get basic business broadband services because built-up residential areas are BT’s focus at the moment. He added that the investment is attracting businesses and it is hoped that more will sign up in the future.
