A total of seven business parks in Colchester are set to benefit from superfast broadband after funding of £200,000 was secured.
The funding has been provided by the South East Local Enterprise Partnership’s Single Local Growth Fund, and Colchester Borough Council will be responsible for ensuring that the infrastructure is up to date at the local business parks. It has not yet been formally announced which business parks in the area will benefit from the superfast services; however, it is thought that business parks that are unable to access faster services from a commercial provider will be chosen in the first instance.
There are also a number of sites that are not currently covered by the local initiative to provide faster broadband ‒ the Superfast Essex programme ‒ and these may be in the running to benefit from the funding.
The Knowledge Gateway at the University of Essex will benefit, as will the Colchester Northern Gateway business park, as these centres were named in the report authorising the funding. These sites are home to 482 businesses and more than 8,000 employees, and it is hoped that one of the benefits of the funding will be to attract more businesses to the area.
A spokesperson for the council has welcomed the news of the funding, which also has the support of Essex County Council. It is not yet known when work will begin on the installation of the necessary infrastructure.
